labors under the belief that punishing children is wrong, that it will destroy their self-concept. This is the main idea in the article. Do not punish children, let punishment occur naturally. One of his examples is a child who leaves her painting on the floor instead of putting it on the shelf. Another child walks on the painting and ruins it. This is what Mosier calls a natural consequence and is punishment in itself. Mosier says that children should create the rules for the classroom, not the teacher. He suggests that at about age 4, children are capable of proposing rules for the classroom all by themselves. It is better, he says than having the teacher create the rules. This is democratic, he says. However, in fact, it is better for the teacher to identify at least one rule that will lead the classroom to where the teacher wants it to go. This is usually about respect - we all show respect for each other. The other rules he lists are good but there is no guarantee that a 4, 5, or even 6 year old will come up with those rules. The only correct suggestions is that rules need to be phrased in the positive, e.g., with do and not dont. He discuses positive reinforcement, specifically, verbal reinforcement "for socially competent behavior" (p. 165). This contradicts his later comment that teachers should not praise Joshs painting because if praise does not continue for all of Joshs painting, Josh will somehow feel diminished.
