is becoming more and more widespread (Grossman, 2004). This technological development poses distinct, sometimes detrimental, psychological ramifications for people debating whether or not to be screened for certain diseases that
are known to have a genetic component (Grossman, 2004). This topic is addressed comprehensively by Pelletier and Dorval (2004) who describe the challenges that are faced by psychologists due
to the advent of genetic screening. Pelletier and Dorval (2004) begin their discussion by offering a brief history of the science of genetics, but quickly move on to describing
the recent developments that form the subject of their paper. The authors explain that research into human genetic diseases is a relatively recent activity in research and that the concept
of a "genetic disease" did not exist prior to 1940. Pelletier and Dorval (2004) discern between disease that caused exclusively by genetic malfunctions or alterations and those were there is
simply an inherited propensity toward developing the disease, which is an important distinction. After these introductory sections, the authors describe the current trend of screening in order to
determine the probability of developing certain diseases. The options available to those individuals who decide to screen for a specific disease are to take preventive measures based on a high
risk factor, or to become vigilant in getting periodic tests, in the hopes of catching the disease in its early stages; however, the authors emphasize that testing is not destiny
(Pelletier and Dorval, 2004). After commenting on the ever increasing number of diseases for which screening tests can be done, the authors point out how this information has affected medical
