Independent and dependent variables : An independent variable refers to a factor controlled by the research within the context of an experimental design (Independent, 2007). The researcher controls whether or not the participants in the study are exposed to this particular factor. The independent variable is hypothesize to be influenced by other factors, and these factors constitute the dependent variable. In other words, the dependent variable is measured to determine if the manipulation of the independent variable had any effects. Quantitative studies generally always include independent and dependent variables, but qualitative studies frequently do not. As evidenced by the description below of this studys qualitative design, this study does not have either an independent or a dependent variable. Participants : The participants in this study were 52 sixth grade students: 24 boys and 28 girls. The participants were recruited from 11 different evangelical churches located in six states: Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Kentucky and Oklahoma. The churches were selected based on convenience to the researchers and the existence of an established AWANA program of ten years duration or longer. Setting : The researchers do not specifically state where the interviews with the children were conducted. However, as they mention that driving time was a factor in selection and that all interviews were conducted in person, it can be assumed that the study was conducted either at the home of the participant or at the participants church. Summary of Procedures : Interviews were approximately 20 minutes in length. They were recorded and transcribed verbatim. The interviews were semi-structured and consisted of 22 questions that focused on the reasons for AWANA participation.
