In other words, his unusual sexuality is not all that he is. He is first and foremost an individual with interests and desires that are separate and apart from who
he is as a sexual being. His experience of being called a faggot by a stranger sends him on a cerebral journey. He starts to criticize society in general and
how it does subscribe certain attributes to all men. He explains that any man could be called a faggot even if he were straight. The slightest differentiation from the definition
of masculinity could set that off. Hence, an ordinary man in a pink shirt might draw criticism but that is ridiculous. Such a situation merely provides evidence that gender is
socially constructed. Indeed, the essay does prompt one to question the idea of gender anyway. The essay overall does not focus on the sexuality of the author, but rather,
it focuses on how society puts everyone in boxes. Indeed, why should boys be expected to play ball and girls be expected to play with dolls? This idea does render
one less that a full-fledge individual. Asher himself is neither all male or female but he considers himself to be a gay boy. That said, there is a lot one
can glean from the essay from the fact that gender roles may indeed be socially constructed to an inquiry into the odd biology questions that loom. One may recognize the
general query made by people who are straight and pay little attention to anything else. They want to know how someone can be attracted to someone of the same sex,
and even if they can understand that, they have difficulty understanding why anyone would want to change their sex or sexual ambiguity or why men like to wear womens attire.
