coronary artery bypass graft surgery Identification of the problem : Patients who are awaiting coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery experience increased levels of anxiety and depression, which are factors
related to the increased severity of chest pain and dysponea, as well as increased myocardial ischaemia and infarction (McHugh, et al, 2001). Despite having coronary heart disease (CHD), these patients
generally have numerous risk factors associated with CHD that are not addressed, such as hypertension, increased cholesterol, smoking and obesity. Research question/aim/objectives : The purpose of the study conducted
by McHugh, et al (2001) was to evaluate the effectiveness of a nurse-led shared care intervention for patients on the CABG waiting list, in order to improve their CHD risk
factors, general health status and also to reduce their general levels of anxiety and depression. Research design : Conducted over the course of 15 months, patients on the waiting
list were randomly assigned to either a control group or the intervention group. General practitioners (GPs) were contacted concerning their consent for their patients to be recruited in the study.
The GPs were then asked to their practice team would like to participate in the shared care intervention (McHugh, et al, 2001). All of the practices contacted agree to participate,
which resulted in 47 practices taking part and two of these having two patients. The sample : 98 (75 male) consecutive patients were enlisted in the study within one
month of being placed on the elective CBAG list at Glasgow Royal Infirmary University NHS trust (McHugh, et al, 2001). All vital data on each patient was recorded, including information
concerning additional risk factors. Instruments used for data collection : General health status was ascertained by using the 36 items sort form health survey (SF-36) (McHugh, et al, 2001).
