in the transition period into adolescence. Spinal fusion surgery is typically employed to stop the progression of the spinal curve. Enduring post-operative pain for adolescents undergoing this procedure presents a major challenge. LaMontagne, et al (2003) designed and conducted a study in order to evaluate the effects cognitive-behavioral interventions on the patients experience of pain and focus on potential applications of these interventions (LaMontagne, et al, 2003). Cognitive-behavioral interventions refer to "behavioral and cognitive treatment approaches designed to help patients recognize distress and teach them behavior to decrease their distress" (LaMontagne, et al, 2003, p. 398). The sample group for the study consisted of 66 adolescents (ages 11-14) who were scheduled for major spinal surgery for idiopathic scoliosis. The adolescents were randomly assigned to three intervention groups and a control group. The interventions consisted of concrete-objective information plus coping instruction; concrete objective information only; and coping instruction only. The intensity of post-operative pain was assessed for each adolescent on days 2 and 4 following surgery. The concrete-objective information focused on details concerning the surgical procedure. The coping instruction included specific strategies that the patients could realistically be expected to perform during recovery to lessen post-operative pain (LaMontagne, et al, 2003). The design of the study made sure that the control group received as much attention from nursing staff as the experimental groups (LaMontagne, et al, 2003). The intervention that focused only on the coping instructions proved to be the most effective intervention for helping the adolescents in coping with pain on post-operative day 2. On post-operative day 4, the patients who received coping instructions (either coping alone or coping plus information) reported that they experienced less pain than those who did not receive coping instructions.
