from eLibrary database. . Over the past several decades, healthcare practitioners have become much more aware of the implications of "dementia in general and of Alzheimers disease (AD) in
particular" (Stewart 23). Dementia is "caused by the destruction of brain cells" and once brain tissue is destroyed, it cannot regenerate ("Information" 1051). It has been estimated that four million
elderly Americans have been received a positive diagnosis for dementia (Talerico, Evans and Strumph 169). Their care is complicated by the fact that as many as 80 percent of these
patients, at some point, demonstrate aggressive behavior (Talerico, Evans and Strumph 169). Aggression is most frequently perceived as a response to an invasion of personal space during care activities,
such as bathing. Care providers often respond to aggressive behavior by employing both physical restraints and psychoactive drugs (Talerico, Evans and Strumph 169). Literature indicates that Alzheimers or dementia patients
are easily confused and may have severe problems with communication, which can lead to frustration, depression, or numerous other negative psychological states that can bring about aggressive, agitated or resistant
behavior in nursing homes residents. The following discussion offers a detailed examination of a study addressing this problem. Authors hypothesis: The authors of this study argue that since
there is no cure either for Alzheimers disease or the various forms of dementia on the horizon, healthcare practitioners should "identify individual characteristics and behavioral management strategies" that can be
used to improve the care of older adults suffering from dementia who exhibit aggressive behavior in response to care. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine if there
