this societal emphasis on maintaining the dignity of the terminally ill, the use of advance directions (ADS), such as living wills and powers of attorney in regards to health care,
have not significantly increased in use. This constitutes a problematic area for health care providers, as they often have no clear guidance toward implementing the wishes of the patient. The
fact that problem exists suggests the emotional turmoil and trepidation that this topic institutes among both patients and their families. In a 2003 research study, McDonald, et al, address
this issue, exploring the manner in which adults communicate their end-of-life preferences. By exploring this issue through a qualitative study, this research team was able to clarify communication problems that
routinely cloud this area of discussion and also suggest implications for improved nursing practice. The following critique of their published study demonstrates that this research endeavor was professionally planned, implemented
and assessed, broadening knowledge nursing practice in regards to end-of-life decisions. This examination will show that there are few areas in which to criticize or improve this excellent example of
