Petrella and his colleagues designed a longitudinal study in order to evaluate the effects of regular exercise on the development of "metabolic markers of cardiovascular disease risk" (Petrella, et al, 2005, p. 694). This study article begins by establishing why this research is important. They point out that while older people tend to get more sedentary in their lifestyle, the important of physical activity in preventing cardiovascular disease (CD) remains constant. Recent research has shown that even a modest change in lifestyle can produce a major reduction in risk for developing type 2 diabetes at middle-age; however, to date, no studies have specifically examined the effect of an exercise program adopted in later life and whether it can have a positive impact on metabolic risk factors, such as diabetes, for CD. The study utilized two large cohort samples of older adults from the same geographic region. One group of individuals contacted the Canadian Center for Activity and Aging and volunteered for participation in a supervised exercise program. This constituted the active group. Their health status was contrasted against a cohort of sedentary adults in order to study the long term effects of exercise on CD risk. Participants were aged 55 to 75 years at recruitment in 1989. The active group attended 30 to 45 minute exercise sessions three times per of supervised aerobic activity. This longitudinal study took place over the course of 10 years. As can be expected, some participants dropped out. However, the researchers do a good job of describing their study parameters over the period, such as indicating that only those individuals who attended at least 80 percent of the exercise sessions were included in the study data.
