Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 3 page article critique that offers a complete overview of a 1994 study on IV flushing solutions. This study was initiated due to the fact that empirical evidence links heparin inducted thrombocytopoenia (HIT) to the use of "prolonged flushing intermittent IV cannula" with "heparinised saline" (p. 174). Therefore, this study was initiated to determine if this solution was a superior flushing agent to normal saline. No additional sources cited.

Interventions or key variables examined The key variables examined pertain
specifically to the type of flushing solution used. The control group of patients were prescribed heparinised saline as a flushing agent, while the experiments group was prescribed the use of
normal saline as a flushing agent. Important and statistically significant findings No significant differences were detected regarding the duration of IV therapy, the patency of IV line
or the "incidence of phlebitis when normal saline was used to flush the IV cannulae" (p. 174). However, when chi square testing was performed , significant associations emerged between
the rate of phlebitis and the use of the IV antibiotics tobramycin (p=0.05) and/or Timentin (p=0.008). Furthermore, it was discovered that young children displayed a significantly higher incidence of blocked
cannulae despite the flushing solution that was used. Brief Overview of Other Outcomes In discussing other studies done on this topic, the authors points out that the vast majority
of these studies have failed to determine that heparinised saline solution offers any statistically significant advantages. However, the author also points out these studies were with adult populations; therefore, this
study addresses the question to a pediatric population. Reliability Concerns The extensive list of definitions employed as part of the studys methodology facilitated the identification of any problems associated
with the IV therapy. Nursing staff involved in the study were conscientious in report the condition of the IV site and it is believed that assessments utilized in the study
