and require more extensive care" (Conway, McMillan and Solomon, 2006, p. 233). As stays within an acute care unit are becoming shorter, this means the transition phase between acute care
and discharge takes on significant importance in fulfilling the needs of care. Conway, McMillan and Solomon (2006) designed a study that examined the work practice of nurses in a cardiac
step-down unit (CSDU) in order to establish congruence between patient needs for care and nursing practice. This problem is significant to nursing in that aligning nursing practices with a high
level of patient care is the primary goal of professional nursing 2. Study Purpose : Nursing staff in the CSDU of a large regional hospital located in New South Wales,
Australia, openly recognized that working environment issues were having a negative impact on both nursing staff morale and, subsequently, on patient care. This provided the impetus for the study, with
the purpose of investigating how "changes in the practice environment," over the last decade, resulted in a need to rethink the "nurses role and their function within the CSDU.
3. Research Question : The research question for this study, while not overtly stated, basically consists of two parts. First of all, the researchers were interested in determining what factors
were contributing to the "toxic" work environment, which characterized this CSDU, as there was "evidence of a lack of meaningful challenge and professional growth, frustration, tension, conflict and burnout" (Conway,
McMillan and Solomon, 2006, p. 233). Secondly, the researchers were also interested in determining how best to rectify these problems. As these problems concern the nurses perception of their day-to-day
experiences, this topic is not only sufficiently broad to be addressed by a qualitative study design, but ideally suited to this methodology. 4. Study design : This study employed
