have cancer, in general, is associated with pain by the general public. This results in anxiety and psychological distress, which has been observed to reduce a patients tolerance for physical
discomfort, impeding overall functioning. For these reasons, Mystakiclou, et al (2006) formulated a study that examined the relationship between psychological distress and pain intensity and interference. This research team speculated
that it could be shown that there is a positive correlation between the oncology patients level of anxiety and psychological discomfort and the patients level of pain perception and, also,
the degree to which pain interferes with the patients life. A secondary purpose to this study was to evaluate the predictive power of the Greek Brief Pain Inventory (G-BPI) in
regard to patients experience of anxiety and depression. According to these researchers, there is a debate in empirical literature as to whether "pain causes changes in mood states or
whether changes in mood states amplify pain perception" (Mystakiclou, et al, 2006, p. 401). As this suggests, understanding the relationship between pain perception and mood is complicated. Furthermore, simply to
experience receiving a diagnosis of cancer and the subsequent treatment of the disease, typically has a profound effect on the patients psychological state and mood (Mystakiclou, et al, 2006).
Literature Review As the above summation indicates, the researchers provide a logical and persuasive argument for their selection of study topic and the legitimacy of their investigation. However, they
