(CMNP) has not been proven through empirical research. CMNP is associated with a variety of structural dysfunction within the neck and is responsible for a large number of missed work
days. Degenerative and progressive in nature, there is no cure and systematic reviews of convention physical therapy suggests that there is little efficacy for such interventions (White, et al, 2004).
Study Purpose Two systematic reviews of acupuncture treatments for neck pain suggest that there are few published studies on this topic and also that the studies that have been
conducted are of poor quality (White, et al, 2004). Therefore, this research team conducted a rigorous study to determine if Western-style acupuncture works better than placebo for the treatment of
CMNP. "Western acupuncture" is defined as "conventional diagnosis followed by individualized acupuncture treatment using a combination of prescriptive tender, local and distal points" (White, et al, 2004, p. 911).
Research Question(s) The research question, while not formerly stated as such, is implied in the study purpose, which is to determine the efficacy of acupuncture in regards to CMNP.
