Essay / Research Paper Abstract
5 pages in length. The purpose of this research project was to determine the abnormal impact sustained upon the thalamus and pons in alcoholism and schizophrenia. Based upon prior research that established a definite correlation between the aforementioned and postmortem/in vivo brain imaging studies, the authors' hypothesis was to ascertain if or how much patients with both diseases would exhibit overstated volume deficits in either aspect. No additional sources cited.

-- was to determine the abnormal impact sustained upon the thalamus and pons in alcoholism and schizophrenia. Based upon prior research that established a definite correlation between the aforementioned
and postmortem/in vivo brain imaging studies, the authors hypothesis was to ascertain if or how much patients with both diseases would exhibit overstated volume deficits in either aspect.
The research method utilized obtaining volumetric measures of both right and left pons and thalamus which were acquired from twenty-seven schizophrenic patients by way of
existing MRI scars; other identical samples were taken from nineteen schizophrenic/comorbid alcoholics, twenty-five alcoholics absent of any comorbid axis I disorder and fifty-one healthy comparison subjects. All participants were
men. The design included a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) as a means by which to establish any demographic disparities; those found included education, general intelligence and total lifetime
of alcohol consumption. The authors ultimately concluded that patients with schizophrenia and comorbid alcohol dependence are "at risk for alcohol-related reduction of pontine structures that are not necessarily affected
by schizophrenia per se" (Sullivan et al, 2003, p. 1110). Having been properly executed, the study design effectively matches their purpose, in that it represented a quantitative approach, which begins
with an idea that is usually articulated as a hypothesis. From there, through measurement, data is generated and a conclusion drawn by way of deduction. In contrast to
this method, qualitative research begins with intent to review a certain area. The researcher then collects data through observations and interviews and generates his or her ideas and hypotheses
from these data. These inferences are largely made through what is known as inductive reasoning. The strength of the quantitative approach in this case is in its reliability
