gives us a disturbing picture of "the Big Easy," in which murder is the order of the day and no one seems to care, or to be able to do
anything about it. This paper analyzes the article and answers some questions and observations about it. Discussion The first question is, what are the objectives of this article. Since this
is an informative piece rather than a breaking news item, its purpose must be to inform readers about a specific issue. There were 161 killings in New Orleans in 2006,
and thus far in 2007 there have already been 18 (Nossiter and Drew, 2007). This incredibly high level of violence makes New Orleans the "murder capital" of the United States,

the extent of the difficulty, the putative causes of the high murder rate, and the reaction of the New Orleans residents. The audience for the piece is presumably a general
audience; anyone who reads the paper or accesses the article on the Internet will learn something from it. The recipients presumably are those for whom the article has a definite
message: those who are in a position to do something about the situation, for example (though exact courses of action are unknown). This would include the local police, New Orleans
residents, and government at every level, among others. The term "concentrated vs. diverse interests" is unfamiliar, but perhaps we can come at it logically. When we talk of environmental issues,
we say that these matters are important to a large and diverse group-everyone on earth, as a matter of fact, since clean air and water are of importance to all.
