the labor force in great numbers in the 1960s, 70s and 80s; and that the waning influence of the womens organizations is in large part the reason for the lack
of progress in the intervening years. This paper analyzes her essay in detail and argues that XXX. Discussion Freedman writes that she doesnt accept that "female networks and feminist politics
were incompatible" but that the "creation of a separate, public female sphere helped mobilize woman and gained political leverage in the larger society (Freedman, 1979, p. 14). In other words,
it is because of the female networks that women gained in the political arena. The term "female sphere" can be understood to mean those areas of life in which women
succeeded in making their presence felt; one of the best examples of this is Hull House in Chicago. Jane Addams created an establishment that used "traditional" feminine values (mothering, nurturing,
caring) and turned them to a social cause. Womens activism on behalf of others was not seen as threatening, since the qualities it takes to help the less fortunate are
the same qualities that society considers intrinsic to, and acceptable in, women. This goes back to something that Freedman says in the beginning of her essay; in fact, its common
to most feminist writers, and that is that women and what is acceptable for them to do is usually not determined by women, but by men. If men can convince
