by giving some general background about the population, with particular emphasis on the fact that by 2016, 16% of the Canadian population will be over 65, and that by 2041,
23% will be over 65 (Chertkow, 2008). This means that gerontology will become increasingly important as a medical discipline, and diseases of the aged, including Alzheimers, will also become extremely
important (Chertkow, 2008). Alzheimers prevalence varies widely with age; among people from 65-74, there is a 1% chance of developing the illness; from 75-84, 6.9% of people are sufferers, and
among those over 85, the rate soars to 26% (Chertkow, 2008). There are approximately 60,150 new cases diagnosed each year, and at present there are approximately 450,000 Canadians with dementia;
these figures, which are already alarming enough, are "expected to double over the next 30 years" (Chertkow, 2008, p. 316). These statistics are frightening for any older person. However, Chertkow
says that there have been many developments spread across various fields that deal with Alzheimers, including management, risk assessment, and biology and genetics (Chertkow, 2008, p. 316). Among specific techniques
that have been improved we find "neuroimaging, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), hippocampal volume measures, and positron emission tomography (PET) scanning with flourodeoxyglucose and amyloid ligands" (Chertkow, 2008, p.
316). Other developments in the field include the "recognition of the potential role of homocysteine in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer disease," as well as the discovery of new genes that
have been coupled with a late onset of the disease and a "form of frontotemporal dementia" (Chertkow, 2008, p. 316). Furthermore, it has now been recognized that such "vascular risk
factors" as hyperlipidemia and hypertension may increase the risk of developing Alzheimers, which means that prevention of these conditions might offer hope for the prevention of Alzheimers itself (Chertkow, 2008,
