This paper analyzes an article that deals with the tricky question of how to discipline toddlers. Discussion The author: Heidi Murkoff is the author of the article Toddler discipline that
works. She is also the author of a series of books on parenting called the What to expect series; it contains titles such as What to expect the first year,
What to expect the toddler years, and other similar works (About the author, 2007). Murkoffs first book is entitled What to expect when youre expecting; the idea came to her
"when she discovered that most books only added to her questions and worries" (About the author, 2007). Based on her own anxiety and inability to find comprehensive information, she determined
that she would write a book for expectant parents that would help them "sleep better at night" (About the author, 2007). That first book is often referred to as the
"pregnancy bible," with over 14 million copies in print (About the author, 2007). Her reason for writing the article about toddlers is to give parents practical advice about disciplining children
at this difficult stage of development. The article: The article takes the form of a series of questions and answers. Each question deals with one specific form of unacceptable behavior:
screaming; tantrums; a child who wont allow his mother to brush his teeth; and nightmare mealtimes (Murkoff, 2007). Murkoff then gives suggestions on how to deal with each of these
problem behaviors. When a child screams, Murkoff reveals, its because they have just learned that they can "create and broadcast sound" (Murkoff, 2007, p. 106). They have no idea how
