article is difficult. She is an academic apparently writing for other academics who are equally expert in the field; the material seems to be advanced for a laymans understanding. Her
article focuses on the fact that language, even the carefully constructed language of poetry, may not be adequate to express certain concepts. She notes that many poets have sought attention
by claiming that they were limited in their ability to present their subject adequately; she says that Finch goes even further: she claims that the language itself and its rules
may be inadequate for her to be able to explain herself. Keith examines the poem "Friendship between Ephelia and Ardelia" as an example of the problems that can arise linguistically
when trying to describe feelings. The subject of the poem is friendship, but the poet cannot say what friendship truly is, all she can do is give a list of
sacrifices friends might perform for each other: "Tis to share all joy and grief; / Tis to lend all due relief" (Keith 466). There are several other actions that the
poet suggests friends will do for one another, but that, as Keith points out, is not the same as defining friendship: "The abstraction friendship is not defined per se but
exemplified by a series of mimetic actions in which one person takes anothers place or lends some replacement, due relief" (Keith 466). In other words, Finch can only describe the
acts friends do, not what friendship itself is, and this is a limitation in the language. If we think about this, it makes sense. For instance, when we talk about
