DES was used extensively among both cattle and sheep growers in the US prior to 1979, which is when it pulled off the market by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a suspected carcinogen (Olson, 2000). Research subsequently showed that a tendency to develop cancer and other abnormalities is prevalent among the female offspring of women who consumed DES while pregnant (Olson, 2000). The Agriculture Department tested beef for DES content for a number of year, but discontinued the practice in 1991 when the beef supply was consistently DES free (Olson, 2000). Stakeholders, participants, interest and affected parties The stakeholders in this situation are varied and encompass virtually the entirety of both the US and Swiss populations, as well as any other locality where the tainted beef might be consumed. The beef could affect that health of consumers, and their children. If the public, either in the US or abroad, has cause to fear beef consumption, they will avoid this food. This affects the cattle farmers who produce the beef, as well as the people who rely on the farmers as customers.
