discuss a program known as "SunWise," that helps school children understand the dangers of exposure to the sun, something that has probably received little attention in most curricula. They begin
the article by noting that approximately 1.3 million Americans "are diagnosed annually with skin cancer, currently representing more than 50% of all cancers in the United States" (Geller et al,
2003, p. 93). Melanoma, which is the deadliest form of this cancer, will be diagnosed approximately 53,600 times; it will result in approximately 7,400 deaths (Geller et al, 2003). Geller
observes that the number of melanoma cases is rising more rapidly than any other type of preventable cancer, and has been "linked to excessive sun exposure" (Geller et al, 2003,
p. 93). In fact, it has been found that people who have had "at least two blistering sunburns before the age of 18" may be at twice the risk of
developing melanoma as an adult (Geller et al, 2003). Clearly, then, exposure to the sun is potentially life-threatening, and the U.S. government set out to do something about it. The
EPA developed the "SunWise School Program," which is the "first national health environmental education program for sun safety designed for children in elementary and middle schools" (Geller et al, 2003).
The overall objective of the SunWise program is to provide "sun protection education to at least 20% of the nations schools, Grades K-8, by the year 2005" to help reduce
the possibility of the children contracting skin cancer or other health problems associated with exposure to the sun (Geller et al, 2003). The rest of the article is devoted to
