patients were admitted directly to an intensive care unit (ICU) directly from the operating room. After one to two days in this ICU, the patient was then transferred to
a post-coronary unit. This traditional care delivery model involved multiple transfers, delays in care, dissatisfaction among patients, increased costs, and provided a greater potential for error (Clark, Roberts and Traylor,
2004). Therefore, the medical/surgical nursing unit instituted a cardiovascular single-unit-stay program in which patients remain in the same room with the same care team supervising the entirety of the
patients post-operative hospitalization (Clark, Roberts and Traylor, 2004). This program was found to decrease lengths of stay, decrease morbidity and mortality, while increasing patient satisfaction (Clark, Roberts and Traylor, 2004).
Furthermore, the multidisciplinary surgical team reported improved collaboration between members. In order to relate this article to how these findings might affect the practice of the student researching this
topic, this writer/tutor would have to know the details of how cardiac surgical patients are handled at the particular hospitals where the student practices. Perhaps your hospital has already addressed
this problem and provides continuity of care through a similar program; or, perhaps, the students hospital follows a traditional care delivery pattern in which case the model offered by Clark,
Roberts and Traylor (2004) may be one that the students nursing unit might want to consider. In presenting this information to a surgical nursing unit, the presenter would want
to utilize the information given in the Clark, Roberts and Traylor (2004) pertaining to how the cardiovascular single-unit stay model was developed, as this helps to illustrate its legitimacy. This
program was modeled on the heart surgery program used at Loma Linda Medical Center in California. This presentation could cover the essential elements of instituting the program at the authors
