her interest in the ways in which black women engage in and utilize literacy within non-institutional community spaces. As indicated by her title, Mosss study focuses on Phenomenal Women, Incorporated
(PWI), explaining that these women frequently employ their literacy skills in order to promote civic engagement and action, as well as cultural enrichment. Specifically, Moss focuses on how the women
engage in literary events associated with yearly Black History Month celebrations. Mosss methodology entailed gathering data over the course of a 16-month period. Data collected included field notes, which
were taken by the researcher at month meetings, as well as at club-sponsored events (Moss 5). Additionally, Moss made audiotapes of the meetings, as well as club-related events, which were
also videotaped (Moss 5). Individual interviews were conducted with members of PWI, with some interviews consisting of focal groups, which were organized from within the organization (Moss 6). The researcher
indicates that she participated whenever she was invited to attend club events; but, she also stipulates that her primary role was as an "observer-participant" (Moss 6). The primary goal of

gatherings that enrich their lives (Moss 9). The study participants emphasized that PWI members all share the same "values, interests, and goals" (Moss 9). Their collaborative efforts are exemplified by
