shortage. Discussion The article is entitled "Public perceptions of nursing careers: The influence of the media and nursing shortages" by Karen Donelan, Peter Buerhaus, Catherine DesRoches, Robert Dittus and David
Dutwin. The authors conducted a national survey about the public perception of the nursing profession, and found that a substantial majority of Americans use words like "respected," "caring," "dedicated," "skilled"
and "caregiver" to describe nurses (Donelan et al, 2008). Overall, 68% of the public had a favorable impression of nurses and nursing; the only profession that scored higher was teaching,
at 74% (Donelan et al, 2008). The question then becomes, if Americans generally hold nurses in such esteem, why arent more people entering the profession? That is the question the
authors explore in this article. One explanation of this contradiction may lie in the fact that the publics response to questions about nursing differs substantially from the nurses opinions of
their own profession (Donelan et al, 2008). While the general public would have no problem in recommending a career in nursing to young people, health professionals are "significantly less likely
to definitely or probably recommend such careers (Donelan et al, 2008). Thus it seems that nurses themselves are not recommending their own career to others, at least not as frequently
as would seem reasonable if they liked it as well as the general public does. The reason most people enter the profession is "personal experience with nurses as a patient
or family members" (Donelan et al, 2008, p. 143). They obviously have such a positive experience that they want to enter the profession, but nurses themselves are leaving. Nurses themselves
tend to attribute this to "working conditions and faculty shortages" but the public still thinks that the main issue is salary (Donelan et al, 2008). Donelan and her colleagues argue
