plan to discuss: ambiguity and how to cope with it. Ambiguity is a fact of life, but its one that sometimes paralyzes people when decisions need to be made. If
there are a number of possible solutions but no clear right answer, the inability to decide on a course that is guaranteed to work can paralyze some people. The
authors talk about this, and the various personality types who successfully deal with ambiguity; there are eight such personalities, and they describe each of them. Because this is one of
the most important parts of the article, it seems reasonable to give the list. The eight are as follows. First are the "Mystery Seekers" - people with a lot of
curiosity "who are attracted to areas that are unknown and to problems that appear to have no obvious solution" (Hodgson and White, 2003, p. 5). The second group are the
"Risk Tolerators" - people who are able to make decisions even when they dont have complete information, and who can tolerate running the risk of failure; the third are the
"Future Scanners" - people who ask questions and make links among various seemingly unrelated bits of information, and at the same time look for what the future holds (Hodgson and
White, 2003, p. 5). The fourth group comprises the "Tenacious Challengers" - people who take on the toughest problems; the fifth are the "Exciters" - people who "create excitement and
energy at work" both for themselves and others; and the sixth comprises the "Flexible Adjusters" - people who can adjust rapidly when problems arise, and "sell" those adjustments to others
