what he calls the "hollowing out" of the American middle class and the chaos that has wrought on the economy and the future of the country. But he also has
some solid suggestions for getting America going again. This paper analyzes his article. Discussion Zakaria spends the first part of the article discussing whats gone wrong, a useful tactic
for any writer because before anyone can propose solutions, they have to understand the problems. Zakaria doesnt waste time raking politicians over the coals, nor does he go on and
on about tax cuts for the wealthy and other issues. Instead, he reminds readers that the decline of America is really the decline of its driving force, the middle class.
He argues that over the past 30 years are so, the trends in the workforce are the same. He splits the American workforce into three segments: the top earners (not
the vastly wealthy) but the well-educated, sophisticated people who are comfortable with responsible jobs in a global marketplace. This segment is secure and growing. So too are the workers at
the very bottom; the care givers and others in the service industries who make minimum wage; jobs are growing in that segment as well. But where the job growth is
stagnant, and where the outlook is grim, is in the middle. These are the "skilled manual workers and those in white collar operations like sales and office management. These jobs
