Discussion This article may not be of great importance when compared to pieces on the Iraq War or the health care crisis, or the questionable policies of the current administration, but it speaks to a great many people because of the perennial interest in pirates. This article appears in the current issue of the magazine and is available on line; Constance Bond is the author. Bond discusses several different aspects of Blackbeards career, all of which she pulls together easily and in logical order. She examines his reputation as a fierce and cruel man, which she says may be unfounded; she talks about piracy along the Eastern Seaboard, particularly North Carolina; and she discusses the discovery of what may be Teachs ship, the Queen Annes Revenge (Bond, 2007). The discovery of the ship in particular appears to have prompted her to write about the man who sailed her, but the ship also tells interested parties a lot about pirates in general. Bond begins her article with an anecdote about Blackbeard: in May 1718, he and his flotilla of four ships blockaded the harbor at Charles Town (now Charleston) South Carolina, holding the city hostage (Bond, 2007). His demand is for a chest of medicine and he threatens to execute his hostages if its not delivered (Bond, 2007). But he treats the prisoners well, freeing them from the hold and allowing them on deck after only a few hours; then "Teach calls a delegation of the prisoners into his own cabin on the Queen Annes Revenge" (Bond, 2007.
