to give students some feeling for Native cultures. Their approach, given their introductory statement, seems ironic to say the least. They have gathered together accounts, some contemporary, some historical, some
written by Indians, others by whites, and by presenting them as a unit, allow the reader to see, perhaps for the first time, the depth and complexity of Native American
culture. Part of the problem with any attempt to study "Indians" is that no such monolithic construct exists (Davis and Van Tine). There are numerous tribes with their own beliefs
and ways of doing things; there is nothing that we can identify with any certainty and say, "thats what it means to be Indian." This diversity contributes greatly to our
difficulty in understand the tribes. Reading through the accounts is quite likely to leave one with a sense of anger over the number of injustices perpetrated on the native population
of the U.S., as well as the knowledge that these issues are still alive, and still create hard feelings and ill will. This makes whites uncomfortable, which may actually be
good for them. One of the best approaches to this subject is in Vine Deloria and Clifford Lytles excerpt, The nations within, which discusses Indian sovereignty. It also helps us
to get to grips with one of the basic problems here, the fact that Indians define themselves very differently from the way whites do, and we seldom are aware of
