Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 3 page essay that offers analyses of two articles on multicultural education. Lisa Delpit's essay "Education in a multicultural society, our future's greatest challenge" (1992) and John Ogbu's "Understanding cultural diversity and learning" (1992) both address the difficulties of meeting the needs of a diverse student population. Examination of these two articles shows that these two experts in the field of multicultural education are in agreement that American schools still have a long way to go before the US educational system will be in a position to address the needs of children whose backgrounds are outside the white mainstream. needs of a diverse student population. Examination of these two articles shows that these two experts in the field of multicultural education are in agreement that American schools still have

the stereotype of the "non-verbal" Native American child. She also describes child-deficit assumptions frequently made about children from lower socio-economic backgrounds that automatically brand these children are deficit (Delpit, 1992).
Ogbu (1992) takes a broader perspective, but makes similar points. Rather than looking at specific classroom examples, he targets his topic to the fact that the core curriculum movement
and the multicultural education movement are two major factors in todays educational landscape. According to Ogbu, both of these movements are deficient in addressing the needs of minority students. First
of all, he looks at the core curriculum movement, which he feels is primarily concerned about "US economic and technological status in international competition" than they are about "assimilating culturally
diverse groups" of student into mainstream culture" (Ogbu, 1992, p. 5). He points out that it is not effective to simply announce that higher academic standards are expected. While
