The Crucible has focused on the play implies about the McCarthy era and the "witch hunts" for communists, which were going on in Congress at the time. This
form of inquiry, while informative, overlooks appreciation of the dramatic structure of this play, regardless of its symbolic meaning for the 1950s. As Shipley (1972) insists, The Crucible, should
be examined as dramatic art, rather than as an allegory for the political atmosphere of the 1950s. An analysis of that structure demonstrates how Miller manipulated the elements of his
play, as well as historical fact to order to heighten tension at key points in the plays structure. The main protagonist of the play is John Proctor, a good
man, but not a perfect man as he has recently terminated an affair with Abigail Williams. Proctors affair with Abigail shows one of the ways in which Miller heightened the
tension in the play, which is by changing historical detail to create greater dramatic tension. The historical Abigail Williams, who was one of the chief accusers at the 1692
Salem Witch Trials, was about eleven years of age at the time of the trials (Warshow 214). Miller transforms Abigail into a woman of around eighteen or nineteen years old
