When looking at the actions of Metta World Peace, formerly known as Ron Artest, a forward for the LA Lakers in a game against Oklahoma, the elbowing of Harden may
be seen as unsurprising. Metta World Peace was playing in the game when he elbowed Oklhoma player James Harden in the head causing a concussion. This type of violence
is generally seen as unacceptable, and according to the article in the Guardian this was not the first time Artest has had to face disciplinary action as a result of
violent outbursts. In 2004 Artest was given a suspension lasting for 86 games when playing in Detroit, as a result of jumping into the stands in order to fight fans
(The Guardian, 2012). This was followed by a 7 game suspension in 2007 which followed a charge of domestic violence; a charge which was not contested (The Guardian, 2012). The
most recent outburst which resulted in a serous concussion has resulted in another 7 game suspension with Commissioner David Stern stating that the NBA "remain committed to taking necessary measures
to protect the safety of NBA players, including the imposition of appropriate penalties for players with a history of on-court altercations" (The Guardian, 2012). It is noted that the current
suspension will hurt the team as well as Artest as it means he will miss the playoffs. When looking at this event, which Artest stated was the result of
an over zealous celebration of a dunk (Busfield, 2012), it may be considered in a broader social context, looking at causality and symbolic interactionism. Causality is the way in
