Art Nouveau was a movement which grew out of
the Industrial Revolution and had a strong element of internationalism, since it was initiated by a group of designers from a number of countries who were looking to find a
form of art which was typical of the contemporary age, and which reflected its diversity. There were also a number of later movements which arose out of art nouveau and
could be directly traced to it. The student could therefore look at the many varied forms which constituted art nouveau and the way in which different elements were combined.
For
example, there were old kinds of artistic style which were juxtaposed with newly created ones in a way which created an interesting synthesis of both. Some of the designers and
artists involved in art nouveau were particularly interested in the way that the new technology which had evolved out of industrialisation could be incorporated into works of art, whereas others
were more concerned with presenting an idealised version of the past and looked towards mythological and imaginative themes instead.
