in which art is used as a thematic element, and many of these methods of incorporating art into a text are rarely even noticed, as they are subtle. Such is
the case with "M. Butterfly by David Henry Hwang and "How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents" by Julia Alvarez. In the following paper we examine these two stories, studying
their use of art as a means to get the readers attention. The stories are also discussed in regards to Andrew Ross book "Real Love" which has an essay on
what people want from art. M. Butterfly This particular story is one of different cultures, one of the allure of those cultures, and one of intrigue. In this
story we have a young woman who is an incredible artist. Her medium is music and song. This provides us with a very powerful thematic element concerning art. It is
an element which helps us to understand Song Liling and her relationship. The mere artistic element that is the voice and the song of Liling is that which provides us
with the foundation of the story. Now, of course, the music and the song actually serve as a backdrop to the story, from the perspective of the viewers. However,
if we stop and imagine the story without the symbolic presentation of the music and song the passion, the desire, the love, would cease to exist. The art of music
