mind, to the dark beast of the irrational human animal. In fact Goya was also one of the first artists to make human madness a major theme in his
work (Cole 214). Goya examined the fact that madness could happen to the individual from internal as well as external sources. It
is madness from an external source that we will examine here: man as victim. Goya was actually in Madrid when Napoleans troops occupied the city. He may
have even witnessed the execution of the Spanish loyalists on May 3, 1808. Six years later, Goya showed two visions of this historic even. The Second of May,
1808 shows the Spanish resisting Napoleans cavalry; the second and more famous, The Third of May, 1808 depict the French response. The horror and cruelty of war are shown
through the image of the French firing squad executing the Spanish Goya felt that the advancement of the Enlightenment had been dimmed by
the atrocities of his own age. Notice the large lantern in The Third of May,1808. It is hardly a coincidence that those about to die, are in the
light - or enlightened. The evil part of humanity - the executioners, are beyond the light - in the literal and spiritual dark. Faceless anonymous soldiers appear to only
be obeying orders. Notice the figure of the peasant with arms upraised (Christ-like with right hand pierced) with an unforgettable expression on his face - horror, pride, resignation. To
his right, Franciscan monk, symbol of the church or what is right and just, is on his knees - will he be a martyr for the cause? We notice
