the beauty of a crafted artifact comes from its function: pitchers, bowls and the like have aesthetic value because of their usefulness, not in spite of it. However, when this function is removed and the artifact is viewed outside of its proper context, it becomes iconic: it is something intended only for display, and its value rests solely in its visual appeal. Its raison detre has been lost. The crafted item is a part of life, tradition and the community whereas an objet dart is distanced and remote, and frequently associated with elitism or some form of esoteric knowledge which is not available to the majority. We could, perhaps, apply this theory effectively to Strausss Don Juan. It is, clearly, salon art as opposed to folk art: a piece which is designed to be performed and experienced by an elite, rather than something which has grown and evolved naturally out of community tradition. It is also, however, an example of one artistic form being used to convey ideas and concepts which are already established in another: in this case, Lenaus poem, Don Juan. Strauss uses musical themes to convey the personality of Don Juan himself, the increasing dissatisfaction of his amorous affairs, the chaos of his increasingly fevered pursuit of women, and his eventual demise. To someone familiar with the original narrative, it is possible to follow the musical interpretation of the protagonists life. However, without this prior knowledge, the piece is virtually incomprehensible.
