generally assume that the art of a time period reflects the changes that are taking place in that society, though it is also often the case that society alters as their perspective of the current art changes. As such we are left with art as a reflection of social forces or "art for the sake of art" which transcends social forces. The following paper examines both sides of this argument, illustrating how both arguments are incredibly valid. Art is a very diverse, and often very personal, device of expression and therefore can be reflective of social changes or have absolutely nothing to do with any social changes. The paper first examines how social forces in the past have contributed to the production of art, and then examines how art often has nothing to do with any social forces. Social Forces as Influencers of Art One contemporary artist, Manuel Lucero, states, "Art is a reflection of the society in which it is created....In Luceros hands, art becomes a focused reflection illuminating underlying social conditions, a social commentary that startles viewers into awareness of those conditions" (Manuel Lucero: Social Confrontation and Societal Reflection in Art, 2004). For example, "If you had lunch at the Oakland Art Museum during Luceros performance piece, you would have found a tastefully printed card at your table announcing Manuel Lucero is Washing Dishes. You could have walked into the kitchen and seen Lucero hard at work in a cloud of steam. (Manuel Lucero: Social Confrontation and Societal Reflection in Art, 2004).
