time, can stand as a distinct representation of the politics and social perspectives of the era in which they were created. The Mosaics of St. Vitale, The Palace Chapel of
Charlemagne and The Sainte Chapelle in Paris all stand as representations of political propaganda. In each case, the artistry and architecture stand as means of conveying political messages, and
relate the cultural and social context in which these messages existed. The development of the connection between art and propaganda, then, can be traced back to before the fifth
century, and underscores the role that art and architecture play throughout history. The Mosaics of St. Vitale in Ravenna, created in the fifth century, were designed to make a distinct
connection between Justinians role as the leader of the Roman Empire and his religious role as pope. Following the move of the Roman Empire from Rome to the small
seaport town of Ravenna, close to Constantinople, the Emperor Justinian called for the creation of artistry and a temple that were designed to support his role as pope. Like
his predecessor, Constantine, Justinian did not want to be challenged in either his role as the emperor or his right to create his own legacy as pope. As the
political leader and the leader of the Christian faith, Justinian would have ultimate control and would live as the closest earthly being to God. As a result of
