that art takes in any given culture. Two particular times in history that clearly demonstrate a very intricate relationship between art and design are the ancient Roman times and the
Gothic era. The following paper examines the two individually and then examines which era, or historical time period best demonstrates a link between art and design. The paper ultimately concludes
that it was the Gothic era that saw the greatest bond between art and design. Roman In many respects many may well argue that the Romans were highly
influenced by the Greeks in relationship to all levels of their art and design. While they clearly developed some of their own design forms and approaches, as well as various
levels of artistic approach to their culture, they were highly influenced by the Greeks in many respects. In this section the discussion will examines the strengths and weaknesses of the
relationship between Roman art and design. In first looking at the strengths the paper examines particular pieces of art, and architecture. One piece is a "Marble relief of a
farmer with his cow passing a roadside shrine on the way to market. 1st c. B.C. (Munich: Staatl. Antikensammlung)" (Early Roman Empire (Romano-Hellenistic Classicism), 2006). While the piece contains a
