of the awakening that the artists hope is a result of their art. Two very powerful female performing artists are Karen Finley and Arahmaiani. The following paper examines the two
individually and then presents a discussion of the two combined. The paper focuses on how they incorporate the body and social conditions/commentaries into their art. Karen Finley For
most people, the name Karen Finley may well bring up no images at all. However, Finley has received a great deal of attention for numerous reasons. Back in 1990 she
was one of four people who were given the title "N.E.A. Four." This was a group of four performing artists whose grants, which were provided by the National Endowment for
the Arts, were taken away because their work did not fit with the ideals of the organization (Morgan, 1997). "Their work was deemed obscene, as it involved open displays of
homosexuality, the desecration of religious symbols, and in Finleys case, nudity and discussion of topics such as incest, rape, patricide and graphic violence" (Morgan, 1997). Some people may associate
Finleys name with "the chocolate smeared woman, famous for her performance piece, We Keep Our Victims Ready, when she smeared her breasts with chocolate (symbolizing feces,) and bean sprouts (symbolizing
sperm)" (Morgan, 1997). This particular piece was one that addressed concerns about rape and sexual abuse (Morgan, 1997). Finleys work aims at perhaps provoking people, making them think, and
