much today, one way that art has influenced print media is in respect to gender. Kramarae & Spender (2000) explain that in both print media and painting there is a
bias toward women. The nude woman for example is believed to be passive and equated with the male gaze; the female subject is still while the male artist is looking
(Kramarae & Spender, 2000). Hence, fine art does tend to prefer women, and artists have commented over the years that women make the best subjects. They have the most curves.
They are more aesthetically pleasing. These types of preferences have influenced print media and advertising as well. Clearly, there is a greater focus on the female model. This is slowly
changing, but over the years it does appear that art has influenced advertising and print media in this way. Print media and advertising has also influenced art. There is no
better example of this than the works of Andy Warhol. Osterwold (2003) explains: "Warhol not only wanted to turn the trivial and commonplace into art, but also to make art
itself trivial and commonplace" (p. 167). Essentially, Warhol blurred the boundaries between art and advertising, demonstrating that one can find art anywhere and that surely the things people look at-like
soup cans-are art in their own right. Today, as a result of advertising and print media, art has expanded. 2. Examine an artistic trend currently prominent in
