maps and numerous color photos. In some ways it is an odd combination of ideas and concepts in that while it is intended as an introductory text in art
history or art appreciation, it also presents a contrast of subjects and their interpretations. All too often, a reader or an
instructor choosing a text, looks at a volume such as "Art Past, Art Present" as nothing more than a means to the end that describes historical periods, the art of
that period, what it represents, and then moves on. However, Elkins and Schultz offer a greater level of interpretive and thought provoking comparison in their text that calls for
the reader to engage in the well-worn practice of "compare and contrast." The publishers claim to see it as the most absorbing and authoritative
midsize survey of art history including non-Western example that looks at the historical and cultural contexts of art works from prehistoric times to the 20th century, with detailed and informative
analyses of art, artists, patrons, and techniques. It retains its unique chronological presentation in compact topical units, offering an easy-to-use format with general period/style introductions followed by self-contained sections on
a selected number of specific representative pieces. While the text is not that impressive in its pre-determined goal of achieving a global, comparative,
