a common average individual can do a better job at interpreting a piece of art than an art historian could and this is because most art is not aimed at
communicating with the art historian or the art critic but the average individual. As such many art historians will place too much importance on history and the social relevance of
a painting. But, at the same time art historians also have their place in interpretation because it is important, at times, to understand the society and the world struggles at
the time a piece was produced. With this in mind the following paper examines an article and then discusses if the student could do a better job at interpreting Picassos
Guernico than the critic. Art Interpretation: Guernica by Picasso Anyone who looks at Picassos infamous painting Guernica will see many different images, and many different themes going on.
What one viewer sees another may not. One can delve into the history of Picasso and his times to understand what he was portraying and in John Bergers work "The
Success and Failure of Picasso" he does just that. In examining this painting he notes that, "Guernica is a profoundly subjective work-and it is from this that its power derives...he
abstracts pain and fear from history" (Berger 169). He also discusses what Picasso was doing, and not doing and in that respect the critique loses power. While such information
is perhaps helpful to one who wants to know more about this painting, it does not truly eliminate the viewers own gut reaction to the painting. As such there are
