period of the Middle Ages, beginning roughly around the middle of the 12th century and extending to the end of the 16th (IWHP, 2007). While various forms of art were
produced during this era, the period is best known for its architecture. However, sculpture also flourished during this period, in that sculptures were used to decorate both the interiors and
exteriors of medieval churches and cathedrals (IWHP, 2007). A cathedral was the heart of urban life in medieval cities, as this was an era in which secular society was largely
controlled by the Church. Therefore, the nave of the cathedral was not only the site of religious services and it also served as a town hall (Fleming, 1974). A cathedral
towered above the surrounding structures, majestic, beautiful and imposing, a constant reminder to the populace to keep their focus on heaven, rather than worldly concerns. The spires beckoned the "distant
traveler," directed the "weary steps of the toiling peasant homeward" from distant fields and the cathedral bells marked the hours of the day (Fleming, 1974, p. 128). To a basically
illiterate populace, its sculptures and stained glass windows provided visual references to biblical teachings. Discuss how an artist may express his or her point of view by explaining the
content, concept and style of art used during another chosen time in history. Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) was one of the most prominent artists of the High Renaissance period
of the early sixteenth century. One of his greatest achievements was the series of frescoes that he painted on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel from 1534 through 1541. This
art work not only demonstrates a Judeo/Christian theological orientation, but also Michelangelos conceptualization of Neo-Platonic philosophy. Neo-Platonism is evident in the frequent use of geometrical forms, such as the circle,
