a viewer, what touches them, may vary a great deal in terms of the powerful portrayal of the art piece. A viewer may be attracted to colors, or images, or
geometrical art pieces. Formal elements may be the focus, or art pieces that invoke a sense of meaning. With this in mind the following paper presents a critique and reaction
to two different pieces of art. The pieces examined are a painting by Jennifer Main and a photography by Robert Mapplethorpe titled Ajitto. (NOTE: The painting by Jennifer Main is
possibly titled Inspiration: Proper citation not provided by student and painting could not be located online). Art Critique: Reaction The two pieces being examined are incredibly different in
style, presentation, medium, and composition. Both, however, invoke different emotions and thoughts and reactions that are equally powerful. The work of Mapplethorpe may well be considered somewhat controversial in that
his photographs are nudes. The nudes are often explicit and often present parts of the body without any sense of hiding what may be offensive. In this particular painting the
viewer is struck by the composition in relationship to, first off, its black and white presentation. It is a photograph of a nude black male as he sits, pulled within
himself, on a pedestal that is covered in fabric. The photo is a profile of the man and his entire body, save for a small portion of the figures
foot, fits within the frame of the photo. The composition is very inclusive in relationship to hiding little, and utilizing lines that are stark in relationship to the black and
