Urbino" shouts with the pictorial method used by Titian, who was foremost, a colorist. The artist used colors, strokes of paint, and layers of varnish to create his masterpiece.
Titians "Venus of Urbino" was done in oil on a canvas. Jacopo Pontormos "Entombment" was done in oil on a panel. Titian was Proto-Baroque.
Pontormo was Manneristic. There was difference of only ten years between the times the paintings were painted. Jacopo Pontormo painted "Entombment" from 1525 - 1528. Titan painted
"Venus of Urbino" in 1538. Pontormo lived to be sixty-three years of age. Titian lived to a ripe old age, and it is posited that he lied about his
birth date. He died in 1576. Mannerism as an art style was a period before the Baroque period. The artists abandoned copying directly
from nature and began to copy art instead, thus becoming "secondhand". Line, volume, and color were derived from what other artists had already seen. The characteristics that separate
Mannerist art from the Renaissance and the Baroque are distortion and elongation of figures; flattened, almost two-dimensional space, lack of a defined focal point, and the use of discordant pastel
hues. Jacopo Pontormos "Entombment" echoed the stylistic principles of early Mannerism. A strong shift from the direction of High Renaissance art is
witnessed. Odd pastel hues not normally used in this period greatly differentiated this painting from those in the Renaissance. The principle character
of "Entombment" is Jesus. He is dead and has apparently just been taken from the cross. Jesus wears little clothing. A throng of figures surrounds him,
