techniques, giving rise to the Renaissance, Mannerism, and Baroque painting styles. All of these styles were developed out of a new presentation of color as it responds to light
and shadow within spatial relationships and within settings of intricate architecture or idealic expression. This experimentation led to the representation of emotional relationships between everyday people and classical and/or
mystical powers, along with evolving cultural ideals. Finally, the French artists began a movement away from such intricacies to represent the internal figure-the figure concerned with thought and contemplation.
Around 1405, a group of anonymous artists in The Netherlands gave rise to a new compositional style which combined light and color, known as "International Gothic"
(Gowing 660). Using the various interpretations of light, combined with fine architectural or environmental detail, technique was applied to incorporate spatial settings. Three
dimensional space was the main composition of the Boucicaut Master. "In his perspectival skill and precise observation of the effects of light and color, he was the prophet of
early Netherlandish painting (Gowing 662). In a manuscript rendering of Joseph and Mary of The Flight into Egypt (1405-8), the Boucicaut Master creates a three dimensional space from the
bottom of the painting, first highlighting the travelers, then an interim space of field, forest and hills where a winged angel graces the land. The artist then moves upward
to a "city in the sky" backed by a huge yellow sun in a purple setting. Everything is symmetrical, with the center of focus starting with Mary seated
