slaves through personal narratives. But, there do not appear to be many that address the issue of being female in a patriarchal white mans world as well as a black
women in a black mans patriarchal world. In Deborah Gray Whites work "ArNt I a Woman" she examines many slave narratives and other documents to delve into these issues, illustrating
a black female slave that was perhaps different than most people assume. The following paper examines this work, the authors message or purpose, and the themes presented in Whites work.
ArNt I a Woman As mentioned, many works on black female slaves only present and discuss the narratives, not truly examining the position and influence of the African American
female. Whites work seems truly intent on presenting a look at the narratives and other documents to essentially put aside the old stereotypical images of the mammy or the Jezebel,
a black woman seen as nothing but a wild sexual seductress. In Whites work she wants to illustrate that it was the African American female slave that perhaps truly kept
families together, struggled to make things better, and in all honesty, pushed for the African American to succeed overall as a race and culture. White illustrates how the black
women had to live not only as women under the power of men, both black and white, but also as slaves. They thus needed to assume roles within their families
and communities that, in many ways, differed from the roles of other women, white women during the time. As such these black women stood as very powerful, and very unique
