work was considered to be the most intense, deep, realistic work of the time, and his ability to truly bring figures to life has astounded people for centuries. "The Arnolfini Marriage" is a painting that presumably depicts Giovanii Arnolfini and his wife. It is a painting that is rich with detail, much of it symbolic, and also a painting that possesses a great deal of mystery, in terms of its actual subject matter. The following paper examines the historical context of the painting in relationship to the figures and the artist, and also discusses the symbolism within the painting. History and Symbolism In first examining this piece we look at what many have written about the symbolic meanings of many of the items in the painting. In so doing we learn more about the painting, the artist, and the time period in which the painting was created. At the same time we lay down a foundation of common assumptions regarding the historical content of the painting, a historical context that is highly questionable, as we shall see. One author notes that "The bed, the single burning candle, the solemn moment of joining as the young groom is about to place his raised hand in his betrotheds, the fruit, the faithful little dog, the rosary, the unshod feet (since this is the ground of a holy union), and even the respectful space between Giovanni Arnolfini and his wife, Giovanna Cenami, are all united in the mirrors reflection" (Kren; Marx, 2004). These are all symbols that "exalt us and at the same time make us aware of the human potential for goodness and fulfillment" (Kren; Marx, 2004). In addition, it presumably presents the viewer with all that is pure and noble regarding the union of two people in marriage. ...
