is considered to be fundamental to the Army, as this contributes to "building the pride and esprit essential to an effective military force" (AR670-1 2). In accordance with this philosophy,
U.S. Army Regulation AR 670-1 describes in specific detail not only what constitutes various approved Army uniforms, but this regulation also gives details about specifics of personal grooming. For
example, it specifies that all males should keep their faces clean-shaven; however, mustaches are permitted as long as the mustache is kept in accordance with Army specifications. These specifications stipulate
that mustaches should be "neatly trimmed, tapered and tidy" (AR670-1 3). Soldiers must not allow a mustache to have a chopped off or bushy appearance (AR670-1 3). No portion of
the mustache should extend below the lip line, that is, the hair should not extend over the upper lip at any point. Furthermore, the mustache should not extend sideways past
"a vertical line drawn upward from the corners of the mouth" (AR670-1 3). Hair regulations for both men and women are similarly specific. The Army regulations governing personal grooming
are designed to ensure military personnel present a consistently professional appearance. However, as the regulation regarding mustaches indicates, the Army also allows for a certain degree of personal leeway. Such
leeway, however, has to remain within specified boundaries. Men must keep their mustaches trimmed to Army specifications; women can wear lipstick and nail polish, but only using conservative shades (no
