for the democratic ideal. Aristotle (384-322 BC). Aristotle told us, "the excellent person judges each sort of thing correctly, and in each case what is true
appears to him. For each state of character has its own special view..., and presumably the excellent person is far superior because he sees what is true in each
case, --Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics. Aristotle viewed man as the ultimate "political animal." Government is not a human invention, but a natural outgrowth of community life. The purpose of
government is to maintain justice. Aristotle asserts, in his work, Politics "Man, when perfected, is the best of animals; but if he is isolated from law and justice he is
the worse of all." People are to elect by vote those who will govern them. And with an intent to appropriately divide power, Aristotle determined, that a government should
be composed of three sections: the deliberative, the executive, and the judicial. We can see why those who drafted the United States Constitution read Aristotle diligently. In
chapter 3 of The Politics, Aristotle is particularly concerned that those elected to high office do not abuse their authority. He even asserted that the people should bear arms, not
